"Liar"-Almost Done!

Once again, as I said in my last blog, this is a pretty good book, but I STILL don't understand the author's motive for completely changing the subject of the novel in the middle. Yes, I think the author has a really great tone to the book. I like the first-person point of view of the main character and the honesty Micah (the main charachter) has when talking to the reader. The tone really adds a lot to the story.

However, the author, in my opinion, is a very weak writer because she diverges from the original plot. I still do not understand how having your boyfriend murdered links to the fact that you are a werewolf. Maybe, if Larbalestier had made two novels out of these two plots, the ending of this book would be different and it would actually relate to the beginning. Nevertheless, this was an enjoyable and light read (however certainly not the best book I have read). I probably wouldn't recommend this to anyone, because overall the novel seems a bit pointless. Lets see how the last few chapters turn out and if Larbalestier can actually tie things together.

Liar by Justine Larbalestier

I started "Liar" about a week ago and it's a pretty good book. It is a quick read and it is a nice change from the Secret Garden. The first half of the book was a good storyline, but about midway through the book there was a really unexpected turn in the storyline and I don't know why the author put it in. First, the book starts off about a girl named Micah who has problems fitting in, particularly because she is a compulsive and pathological lair. When a boy she was involved with goes missing and is killed, the entire school finds out about their relationship...even the boy's actual girlfriend. o

Ofcourse, Micah has to face the mad girlfriend and the questionings of fellow classmates about involvment with someone who already had a girlfriend, and this also causes problems with the murder investigation. This part was an interesting plot, however then the author adds in that Micah is a werewolf. I thought this was a pretty random twist and it didn't really flow with the rest of the plot. Now, the chapter I am currently reading is about Micah making her first change from human to werewolf. Yes, although interesting, I think it is completely off track from the whole beginning of the story. Let's see how this book plays out!

The Secret Garden--Perfect Ending!

Although this wasn't the most eventful novel, I really enjoyed reading it. As I have said in the previous blogs, I was really able to notice the character change of Mary and Colin by the end of the story. It is amazing how the garden actually helped change them from being bratty children into being positive. By the end, their thoughts were influenced by the beautiful garden surroundings. This environment determined their health and well-being.

Compared to the movie, I personally like the book better. However in the movie, Colin is portrayed exactly how I imagined him to be. The actor did a good job taking on the traits that describe Colin in the novel--negative, moody, and even hysteric at times. overall, I'm really glad i read the book and would suggested it to anyone. It is a great classic and pretty easy to understand. Great book!

The Secret Garden--Almost Done!

I'm not done with the book yet but I'm getting there. I'm enjoying the storyline a lot. I find it interesting that when Mary first arrived, she was poorly misbehaved and acted like a delinquent, which made her no different than Colin. Even before she arrived at the manner, all the servant practically gave up changing Colin's bad behavior and gave in to his need for negative attention. However, Mary was just the type of person Colin needed in order to change his negative attitude: she is a blatant and tells Colin straightly how she feels. Usually when Colin has horrible tantrums, the servants feed him sympathy, causing him to believe in his ailments, even though they are a work of his imagination. Mary will tell him straight out that there is absolutely nothing wrong with him and that he has to stop. I guess I just find it funny how so many adults gave up changing Colin's immature and demanding behavior, and then when a young girl, who is quiet outspoken herself, lives with Colin, she has such an different impact on him that no one else could have.

The Secret Garden--Middle

This is a really good book! The old-style English is a bit hard to read, but it is a nice change. After reading the beginning of the book, I am learning the effect that poor parenting has on a child. It is really sad that Mary's parents didn't spend a lot of time with her and that they had no relationship. This caused her to be a somewhat condescending and bitter child. However, once she moves in with her uncle, she is in a different environment and I think it is good for her. I am starting to see how the garden has helped her become a less cynical, moody child. Now, she is a positive young girl and she even notices that the garden helps Colline, too. This is such a great story, and so far I think I like it better than the movie. Cant wait to read on!

Done with Peeps, onto The Secret Garden

Peeps was a good book, but now I am getting a bit tired of the whole science fiction genre and the vampire plots. However, I do find it interesting to notice the different perspectives of vampires that the two different authors had when writing Twilight and The Peeps. In Twilight, Bella worships and glorifies Edward because of his vampire-like features. However, in The Peeps, being a "vampire" means that you have a disease and you are a carrier of the infection. Its odd how in The Peeps, being a vampire is considered having a sickness and that is why the characters are on a mission to find a solution to end their suffering. By reading these two separate books, it is interesting to see how the concept of being a vampire is up for interpretation and imagination.

For now, I am done with these fiction books and I want to read a more serious novel. I have seen the movie The Secret Garden and I enjoyed it so I am excited to see if I like the novel as much!

Reading Twilight (again) Over Break

Usually I don't like to read books more than twice because it seems boring, but Twilight was a total exception to that. This book is a interesting, fun, and easy read, so it was perfect to read on a school vacation.

Since I already knew the plot, I tried to search deeper than just the storyline and find big ideas and themes of the book. After reading about half of the novel, I realized that it is EXACTLY like Rome and Juliet! Both are about forbidden love, secrets and infatuation. In my opinion, Romeo and Juliet did not truly love each other and were just foolish teenagers who believed that they were meant to be with each other. Yet, unlike most of Twilight fanatics, I also think that Edward and Bella's relationship is just an infatuation and not true love. I am not doubting the fact that they have feelings for each other, but if Bella truly was devoted to Edward, why would she also have feelings for Jacob? After finishing the first book of this saga, I am very disagreeable with Bella's character because she is merely infatuated by being involved with a vampire; she is not in love though. She is swayed by temptations and it is impossible for her to completely have dedication to just one guy.
